🎓 Internship Spotlight: Leo Nguyen | When an Internship Becomes a Strategic Partnership

What happens when a student’s academic expertise meets a growing business with real operational challenges?

For Leo, an MA in Global Management student at Royal Roads University, the answer was an internship that evolved into an ongoing strategic partnership with Pivot Homes Group (PHG), a boutique residential real estate team in Victoria, BC, led by Jayden Vo.

Jayden was at a pivotal point in the growth of PHG. As the business looked to streamline its operations, strengthen its digital infrastructure, and build a foundation for sustainable growth, he recognized an opportunity to bring in fresh expertise. Leo joined the team as an Operations Manager and Business Management Consultant Intern, with a mandate to help turn those ambitions into action.

🔹 From Student to Strategic Problem-Solver
Leo took a consultative approach from the beginning. Rather than simply looking for an internship, he researched local businesses, identified organizations whose challenges aligned with his expertise, and approached PHG with ideas about how he could contribute.
His work focused on auditing workflows, improving systems, and developing a three-year strategic growth plan.

⭐ The Employer Perspective
For Jayden, Leo brought more than analytical frameworks—he brought the ability to turn ideas into action.

“He didn't just look for an internship; he proactively identified our operational gaps and proposed a practical strategy to move us forward.”

His work contributed to a stronger website, a streamlined CRM, standardized training materials, and a consistent digital presence across multiple platforms.
Jayden’s experience reinforced an important lesson for employers hosting students:

“Don’t treat interns as shadow observers or task-followers. Give them ownership of actual business challenges and let them actively build solutions.”

🚀 From Internship to What’s Next
Perhaps the most meaningful outcome is that Leo continues to collaborate with Pivot Homes Group, leading Phase 2 of the organization’s growth strategy, with a focus on multicultural digital marketing, training systems, and automated workflows for the growing agent network.

For Leo, the experience demonstrated the power of applying classroom learning to real business challenges. Leo’s advice to future interns?

“Don’t just look for an internship. Look for a problem you can help solve.”
This first formal collaboration between Pivot Homes Group and Royal Roads University is a great example of what can happen when students are trusted with meaningful responsibility—and employers are open to fresh perspectives.

🌟 Work-integrated learning works best when it creates value for both sides: students gain experience, and organizations gain new ideas, capabilities, and solutions.
