1. Dallas Road waterfront and the Ogden Point Breakwater (Victoria): easy
The Dallas Road waterfront path runs about 3 km along the Strait of Juan de Fuca from Ogden Point to Clover Point, with the Olympic Mountains across the water. It is flat, mostly separated from traffic and easy with a stroller.
At the west end, the Ogden Point Breakwater stretches nearly 800 metres out to sea. Walking out to the end and back is a local favourite at sunset.
Tip: Much of the breakwater has no railing. On windy days with big waves, keep small children close.
2. Gorge Waterway Park (Saanich and Esquimalt): easy
Gorge Waterway Park follows a 1.7 km stretch of the Gorge between Tillicum Road and Admirals Road. The path is flat, with benches and grassy spots for a picnic.
Look for the reversing falls under the Tillicum Bridge, where the current changes direction with the tide. Head south and you can connect to the Galloping Goose over the Selkirk Trestle.
3. Witty's Lagoon and Sitting Lady Falls (Metchosin): moderate
Witty's Lagoon Regional Park has more than 5 km of trails through forest and salt marsh down to a wide sandy beach. The Beach Trail is about 1.2 km from the main parking lot to the sand, and the Lagoon Trail is about 1.9 km.
Sitting Lady Falls on Bilston Creek is only a trickle in summer but roars from late fall through winter, which makes this a great rainy-season walk. Note that the park's Nature Centre has permanently closed.
Tip: For the best view of the falls, take the Lagoon Trail to the viewpoint opposite them rather than looking down from the Beach Trail bridge.
4. East Sooke: Aylard Farm to Aldridge Point and Beechey Head: moderate
For a taste of East Sooke Regional Park without committing to a full day, start at Aylard Farm. About 2 km from the east entrance, Aldridge Point has Coast Salish petroglyphs carved into the rock; the sea lion is the easiest to spot, and many others have faded.
Continue along the Coast Trail to Beechey Head and loop back through the forest for a hike of about 5.5 km, around 3.5 hours.
Tip: The petroglyphs are Indigenous cultural heritage. Look and take photos, but please do not touch or step on them.
5. East Sooke Coast Trail: challenging
The Coast Trail runs about 10 km one way between Pike Road in the west and Aylard Farm in the east, along a rugged, rocky shoreline. It climbs and drops constantly, is steep in places and gets slick after rain. Experienced hikers usually need about six hours.
There is no transit between the two trailheads, so most people leave a car at each end. If you need to bail out, the forested Interior Trail offers an easier way back.
Tip: Start early and pack water, food and a headlamp. In fall and winter it gets dark early, so plan to be off the trail by 4:00 p.m.
